My creative inspiration, often comes through walking the land, taking photographs and collecting materials as I go. These observations are then explored in sketchbooks and materials are selected, which evoke the memory of what I have seen. As an artist I am always searching for new ways to express my experience of the landscape and engage with the unexpected and occasionally disturbing ways, in which the natural and man-made interact. Also the ephemerality and overlooked details of the natural world.
Sketchbook Explorations
Mixed media collages, which may include materials collected from the sea shore, explore the surfaces and textures of the coastal environment. I am particularly intrigued by the strata of the cliffs, rocks and boulders together with the netting of the crab pots and the weathered surfaces of the fishing boats. Playing with materials allows me to build up layers, which are evocative of the environment and explore the interplay between the natural and man-made. Through these experimental pieces I create designs, which are expressed in my weaving; however, also provide inspiration for art works in the future.
